Goal Setters 2022 winners announcement

Four very worthy winners of the 2022 Goal Setters have received their financial awards and will be acknowledged formally at the presentation breakfast scheduled for later in the year.

The winners are:

  •  Alma Adam, a refugee from Syria, with English as a second language has achieved outstanding results to date in her BCom from Victoria University.

  •  Ella Skudder took two years out of school to help care for her very ill sister and then went back to school to get University Entrance. She is now in her fifth year of Medicine at Otago University (Wellington campus).

  •  Oliver McCulloch completed a BSc at Otago University and is now in his fifth year at Medical School in Wellington. Receiving a Tu Kahika scholarship in his first year of study has inspired Oliver to work in the Maori health area in the future.

  •  Piper Kilminster completed her BA at Vic and has now started a Master of Fine Arts specialising in film. Entry to this is competitive and students are advised to focus entirely on their course with no time for work.

Each winner has received $4,000 thanks to four very generous sponsors (Waterford Security, Selvaduri Family Trust, Nicole Barker and Mark Ratcliffe, and the Johnsonville Youth Trust) and our Rotary Club. To learn more about these outstanding young students, make sure you book for the breakfast as soon as we have set a new date.

In response to the deepening humanitarian crisis in Ukraine, The Rotary Foundation has created an official channel for Rotary members around the world to contribute funds to support the relief efforts underway by Rotary districts and has designated its Disaster Response Fund as the main avenue for contributions. Follow this link to see what this means, or the above link to donate.
All funds need to be received into the Disaster Response Fund by 30 April 2022 in order to qualify for use in support of the Ukrainian relief efforts.

Member Profile: Brenda Lazellle

The focus of my career in recent years has been working with researchers at a Crown Research Institute and until recently at Victoria University of Wellington. My husband Dave and I live in Porirua City and we enjoy fishing off the Kapiti Coast, skiing (we got back from 2 weeks in Queenstown the night before lockdown!) and walking. But our greatest joy is spending time with our three mokopuna. I have been a Rotarian since 2003.

From the President..

From the Board..

The club’s fundraising has been very generous, with $1,550 was donated to the Tonga Volcano & Tsunami Response Appeal ($950 donation from members and $600 from the RCPN Charitable Trust). The Club is also supporting the Rotary District's drive to raise $400,000 for the new Wellington Regional Children's Hospital, with the sale of raffle tickets. The funds will go towards The Rotary Whanau Rooms, for the design for the rooms, equipping the kitchen, dining, lounge and play areas. The Board is updating the Club’s Bylaws, and hopes to bring them to the club for approval in April, and discussed the ideas coming out of the new member’s Kōrero meeting held on 27 February. The Board was sad to note that Hayley Burns was stepping down from the Board role of Director - Public image and communication due to the pressures of having a toddler,  but thanked her for all her work over the last eight months.
