“Together we make a Difference”

Kia ora

Another year gone and another ahead of us!

What a fantastic attendance (62) we had at Changeover on 1 July to say thank you to David for his exemplary leadership and stewardship of our club over the last 12 months. His vision for the year was ‘make the club stronger’ and that we did. We should all take a bow for working so hard to fulfill the vision set for us 12 months ago.

It was an honour to have DG Gillian Jones attend and say a few words. Thank you also to AG Helen Algar, Rotaract president Tessa Murphy and Interactors Lea Hemon and Ken Rayner for sharing in the occasion. The musical interlude by Dee Van Wel and her friends Florence and Gabriella finished the whole event off nicely.

Changeover is also an occasion to acknowledge and recognize those who stand out amongst us. Fittingly the PHF ruby sapphire pin was awarded to Bev Wells, Bill Day and Rick Hughes and PHF awards to John Bishop, Richard Brodie and Marc Rands for their services in the true spirit of ‘service before self". What a wonderful tribute to deserving and inspirational Rotarians.

What lies before us is another exciting and no doubt challenging year. Rotary’s theme for 2020-2021 is Rotary opens Opportunities’. Synergistically with that my vision for the year is ‘Together we make a Difference’. What we do and our acts of service creates opportunities for those we assist and opens opportunities for someone, somewhere. This is the compounding effect of service to others.

2021 is Rotary NZ’s centennial year, so we will be working on ideas and projects to celebrate the occasion. Rotary Australasia’s centenary project is ‘Give every child a future’ with the aim of introducing 3 new vaccines for nine pacific island countries with the target of vaccinating 100,000 children. With your involvement, we will play our part in it.

I look forward to giving my presentation to you all at the breakfast meeting on 8 July where I will explain my vision, the goals we will set for ourselves for the next 12 months and introduce you to the team on the board.

We will shortly be issuing invoices for membership subscription for 2020-2021.There will be some amongst us who may be facing financial stress as a fallout of Covid-19. If any member is in this category there is a club protocol to assist – we are here to ensure that you enjoy another year at what is truly a fabulous, exciting and engaging group of like-minded people who not only offer service, but have fun doing it! Join the party!

ngã mihi

Mike

AMBULANCE FOR SAMOA

On Thursday night the High Commissioner and Dean of the Diplomatic Corps (HE Leasi Scanlan) and Mrs Joyce Scanlan attended the Ceremony to recognise and thank the large number of businesses and people who have helped with their time, skills and financial support towards the Project of providing an Ambulance for Samoa. The Ceremony was held at the Headquarters of Wellington Free Ambulance (WFA).

The Rotary Club of Port Nicholson, with the support of their non-government organisation (Rotary NZ World Community Service Ltd), have been fundraising for several months to refurbish, repaint and fund the transport to Samoa of an ambulance donated by Wellington Free Ambulance. The Ambulance is less than 10 years old. It comes with all the necessary emergency and medical fitouts.

Mike Grant (the CE of WFA) welcomed the invited Guests and spoke of how happy they are in being able to assist the people of Samoa through provision of an Ambulance. David Shackleton (Immediate Past President) spoke on behalf of the Port Nicholson Rotary Club in thanking WFA for their very kind donation and support. He then acknowledged and thanked all the many businesses and individuals for their time and contributions which have made this Project a reality.

In his address, the High Commissioner thanked (on behalf of the Samoan Government and People) the President and Members of the Port Nicholson Rotary Club for their kindness and love which has resulted in this amazing initiative. His Excellency also thanked WFA as well as all those who have contributed in one form or another towards the Project.

The High Commissioner noted that the Ambulance will be hugely beneficial for Samoa not only in times of emergency but also in delivering much needed medical supplies and services, especially to the rural areas where close to 60 percent of Samoa’s population reside. His Excellency concluded by requesting WFA for further assistance for Samoa in future through other means of transportation. The CE of Wellington Free Ambulance acknowledged His Excellency’s request and added that they will look at it.
The Ambulance will be driven to Auckland on Thursday 9 July, where it will be loaded onto a ship for Samoa. All going well, the Ambulance is expected to arrive in Apia by the end of the month.

Rotary Walking Challenge!

As mentioned a couple of weeks ago, there was an invite for members to join the Rotary Walk Challenge which was part of the virtual Rotary International Convention.
It has no ended.  There were 4,264 participants from around the world with a total of 114,908,381 steps!
That is an impressive 84,202 Km, which is the equivalent of a 17,409 Kg Reduced Carbon Footprint.
(Note: CO2 Kg Reduced Emission is calculated based on the reduction in emission when walking instead of driving an average gas fueled car the same distance).

Number of participants that exceeded step levels:
- 10K step level: 1,919
- 25K step level: 1,355
- 50K step level:    806

During the week’s challenge, Jenny walked a total of 41km and was placed 675.  I completed 52km  and was placed 469.
Top participant (Monzur from Bangladesh) walked an impressive 735,741 steps!!

It was fun.
Howard
