Rotary Club of Port Nicholson Bulletin

Wednesday 4 December, 2019

President
David Shackleton

Last week I mentioned the Rotary Club of Wellington (RWC) had commissioned a study by a team of MMBA (Marketing MBA) students from Victoria University on how the club should position themselves as, “an enduring service organisation that sustains an active and diverse membership”.
The study determined the issues facing RWC were broken down into 2 areas, environmental and competitive. The environmental factors were:
  • Overly formal lunch format and the time it takes
  • Perception of being for old men
  • Gap in recruitment of ages 30-45
The competitive factors were:
  • LinkedIn and other technology-based networking platforms
  • Anything time related that would take preference over RWC, i.e family, leisure or work.
  • Numerous charities, networking or educational channels i.e. Ted Talks
The issues listed above are not new and we too suffer from some of the same problems. I won’t go through all the recommendations as the report is some 10 pages but to outline a few of the more relevant ones, they are:
  • Podcasts or greater online recording of speakers should commence.
  • Encourage members to use their private networks to attract new members
  • Advertise vacancies across Wellington business channels, LinkedIn, high end recruitment agencies.
  • Work with new members to find out what they want from the Club.
  • Sell the Club as social, ethical and innovative leaders and not just “old men”
We can certainly learn from this study and are taking on board the recommendations.

At the last meeting I reviewed the results of our bulletin survey; we had an excellent response rate of 77% and the results are as follows:
  • 80% of all respondents read the Presidents message
  • 50% read the Speakers report
  • 90% read the duties and roster section
  • 82% read the upcoming events
  • 52% read the funnies.
The feedback and comments were most instructive and helpful. Members want to see more photos, facts about Rotary, shorter reports and features on our members. We have taken all this on board and will enact the recommendations. Finally, it was great to see plenty of praise and recognition for Linda and Paula who weekly work so diligently to put out the bulletin. Ladies, you do a wonderful job and we are most grateful.

See you all on Wednesday

David

Joy Crowley's Christmas blessing
Opening Thought 4 December

At this time of year, we ask for a blessing for our own inner child.
May our eyes be blessed, that they may see each morning as a fresh and beautiful gift.
May we be blessed with the awe and wonder that opens us up our senses wider than wide.
May we be blessed with a love that diminishes fear.
We ask that our softness of touch and wetness of eye be blessed.
May our thoughts dance in sunshine, and when sadness brings rain, may we make rainbows to stretch over the earth.
Above all, may we be blessed with childlike curiosity, for it is in seeking that we come full circle to the joyous freedom of simplicity.
As we leave here this morning, let us be aware that we already have these blessings within us.
All we need to do is unwrap them.  Christmas blessings to you all.

Bill and Lorna Boyd Charitable Trust- Dictionary Project – an update
A message from Joy…….
The warehouses will soon be empty but an order for a further 15000 books has been placed which should arrive by the end of February. Although the landed cost has been increased slightly the Trustees have agreed to absorb the increase keeping the cost at $9.50(gst inc).
The Trust will have distributed close to 200,000 dictionaries over the past eleven years. This will represent a retail value of approximately $6,000,000. How satisfying this is to all who have contributed.
You may be aware that the Trust has had produced by Wendy Pye Publishing Limited a book and flash cards entitled Rhyming around the Alphabet. These books will be suitable for new entrants to schools and some organisations associated with  preschoolers. The Trust's website (http:/boydtrust.org) gives more details and an order form. These books are available for sale now at $7.95(gst inc.)
Joy for some years has coordinated the delivery of dictionaries to Kahurangi School in Strathmore.

Congratulations Joy
A great job well done

Buy your Christmas wine and HELP END POLIO

Fundraising opportunity
Through Peter Whittington District 9940 has been offered a fundraising opportunity for the End Polio campaign.

The offer is for a cancelled export order of very high quality Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc.  Rotarians and friends can buy the wine at $144.00 per case (of 12).  $24.00 of that price will go to End Polio.  This is a quality wine, destined for some of the best restaurants in London and the wider UK.  There is a limited quantity available.

Port Nicholson is backing the project and have committed to take 10 cases:

  1. Peter Whittington will coordinate orders for Port Nicholson members.
  2. For delivery direct to your door, a minimum order of 10 cases is required, otherwise we will arrange for you to collect your order from a central point.
  3. Orders should be emailed to Peter Whittington, syrahnz@gmail.com,
  4. Orders close 15 December 2019.
  5. Once the order is received an invoice will be issued, and once payment is received there will be a credit of $24.00 per case issued, to End Polio.
