President
David Shackleton

On Monday we had a joint Board meeting of the 2019/20 and 2020/21 Boards. This meeting allows us to plan forthcoming events and provide continuity from one year to the next. The projects we have agreed to pursue are the following:
  • Women’s Refuge Annual Appeal-Friday 24th July
We will be manning a collection site at New World Chaffers to raise money for the Refuge
  • Rotary Rhyming around the alphabet books and illustration A- Z Books
Thanks to Joy (the District Literacy Convenor) we have made a District Grant application to purchase a box of books to support schools, Pacific Island communities and the Wellington Children’s Hospital. We are doing this in conjunction with Wellington North, Mount Victoria, Wellington Clubs.
  • Fund raiser for Wellington Children’s Hospital and Malaghan Institute
Tony’s Events committee is organising a fund raiser by selling raffle tickets to raise monies for our two main charities. The committee have some excellent prizes including, Surgeon for the morning at Wellington Hospital, 2 night’s luxury accommodation at Rowley Lodge in Blenheim etc. The price for the tickets will be $20.  A maximum of 1000 tickets will be sold.
  • Tree Planting on Sunday August 9th
Steve and the Community Services committee is organising a tree planting at Tawa and in conjunction with the Tawa City Council etc for Sunday August 9th. Last year we planted more than 500 trees. This will be a family event and hope to get as many of us as we can to attend.
  • House of Grace District Grant Application
Thanks to Bev, we have submitted a grant application to assist the House of Grace upgrade their facilities. This will require a fund raiser from the Club but will be assisted, if the grant is accepted, by the District.
There are other projects in the pipeline however, these are some of the more immediate ones. As you can see, we will have another busy and active year.

On reflection, I acknowledge, it has been unpredictable and at times a challenging year. However, with your support and help, we have accomplished a great deal and I am honoured to be part of your success. I am sure with Mike’s leadership and your assistance the Club will go from strength to strength.

David

Speaker's Report

Christina and John chat after the meeting

Christina Sanders

Wakefield the self -serving father of Wellington

Jerningham Wakefield, the son of one of the founders of Wellington, Edward Gibbon Wakefield is celebrated in a new biography launched on Wednesday and the author, Christina Sanders was at the club this week to tell us about the Wakefield family.

Edward Gibbon Wakefield was well known in Victorian times for his scandalous exploits including two elopements with young heiresses, the second of whom was just 15 at the time. The pair were arrested at Calais after going through a form of marriage at Greta Green.

The marriage was annulled (as the first had been) and Wakefield was convicted of abduction and sent to the notorious Newgate Prison in London, where he both educated and reform himself, becoming a campaigner for prison reform.

Christina came across the story of the Wakefields while researching her own family history and has sought to “add a little balance to the story” of the family which normally focusses on their misdeeds rather than their achievements or their personal qualities.

Edward was the second of ten children, handsome, charming and very personable and persuasive. His mother Priscilla was a Quaker and set up a school of women going into domestic service and was active in the welfare of chimney sweeps. His sisters worked as he did for prison reform and they were successful in getting hanging removed as the punishment for many minor offences.

But it is for his colonisation plan that he is best remembered. He drew this up while in Newgate and persuaded the New Zealand Company which was organising the settlement of Wellington to adopt it. Essentially the plan was to select the very best of British stock and export them to the new colonies where they would receive land.

Wakefield had already purchased vast tracts of land which he was then able to sell at a considerable profit. Christina commented that Wakefield’s philanthropy was always self-serving.

Ben Baker
- presents Mozart, Sibelius, Martinu and Halvorsen during Lockdown

After several weeks in lockdown Ben has been back into a more familiar rhythm and on Tuesday 23 June he was feeling very lucky to be back on stage!

He felt hugely honoured to be a part of the Wigmore Hall's Online Festival with BBC Radio 3 with the incredible violist and his friend, Timothy Ridout. They played a duo programme of Mozart, Sibelius, Martinu and Halvorsen.

The concert was streamed online through the Wigmore Hall's website, BBC Radio 3, and YouTube (link attached below).

The concert will stay online for at least 30 days afterwards the concert.  Click here to view the concert

Ben thought it would be wonderful if you could join them. It is incredible that the Wigmore has been able to make this festival happen and while it is an honour to be in among such a select group of inspiring artists, it is also a lifeline to be back on stage sharing music again so soon.
