  President's Message

It was good to be able to share what we’ve been doing over the past six months supporting youth and our community, locally and internationally, increased attendance since we returned to meeting on a Wednesday, and having a good mix of social events along the way. I will include some of the highlights in the next few Bulletins for those that missed it. I’m happy to email the one-pager to you - just let me know.

We are sad to farewell Victoria Triegaardt who is moving to Auckland to complete her Master’s. Victoria has been a member since 2016 and from the time she joined, has actively involved herself in events and did a fantastic job picking up the Youth Director role last year. As I mentioned at the meeting, during her childhood in South Africa, Victoria was aware of Rotary through her Grandfather who was a member in Lusaka, Zambia and an aunt who completed a Rotary Youth Exchange to Australia. In 2012, Victoria was inspired to take-up a RYE herself from Christchurch to France and subsequently completed the RYLA programme before moving to Wellington.

Go well Victoria. I am sure the Rotarian in you will re-emerge sometime in the future! Have fun along the way and remember to keep in touch while you pursue your dreams!

The calendar is looking action-packed with events coming up. Check out the dates in the Bulletin and please let the organisers know you’re interested.

Rotary Science Scholars

Richard introduced our two speakers this morning. Danny Kivi and Allegra Preddy, year 13s who our club sponsored to attend the Rotary Science Forum in Auckland.

This forum provides 168 students from all across New Zealand the opportunity to see courses from University of Auckland, Auckland University of Technology and Massey. Highlights from the courses for the two were, 3D printing, food technology and chemistry.

Danny and Allegra also spoke about the other things they'd learnt. For instance living in first year halls was a new experience for Danny who learnt how to be more more independent and "do things that mum normally does".

Both students thanked the club for the great experience and the opportunity to make life-long friends who they hope they'll be able to stay in contact with as they progress to university studies. It is encouraging to hear both students will be looking at science degrees at university and that the forum helped them to see all the different pathways available in science.

Seeking Volunteers for the Waitangi Carpark

The club has been given two Sundays – 10 March and 17 March – where we can collect the money from those parking at the Waitangi Park car park. We’ve done this before and successfully raised $400 - $500+ for club funds each time, so it is well worth doing.

As we did before Christmas there will be three shifts each day, and we need about four people per shift. The shifts are:

  • Early – 7 am – 9.30am
  • Middle - 9.30 am – midday
  • Lunch -  midday to 2pm when we finish for the day.
I have three people signed up already, but we need more. Please email me saying which day and which shift you like, and also if there is a shift that you can’t do. If you have no real preference that’s fine, tell the day or days you are available, and I will allocate you to the shift that needs you the most.

Please email - john@johnbishop.co.nz

Martinborough Round the Vines 16 March 2019

This is a fun run or walk covering either 10km or 21 kms.  For those that are focused on fun, each of the drink stops (5 around the circuit) are themed and serve wines from the local vineyards along with the more traditional water.

Below is the web site that has all of the required information:

The standard entry fee is $40 however if we register as teams of 4 we will be able to raise $5 per entrant for our own Club projects.  Last year we made a reasonably significant contribution to the purchase of an ERK. Peter will handle all of the entries, including initial payment, so you need to advise him urgently if you want to participate.  This can be as strenuous or not as you choose.

Following the completion of the fun run or walk we have been invited back to Linda and Craig Wellington's home at Morrison's Bush for a BBQ lunch.

If you are interested in attending this event please advise Peter Whittington urgently as teams and entries are about to be completed. Email him if you are interested in participating - syrahnz@gmail.com.

Rotary T Shirts and Polo Shirts

We are going to put in a new order for Rotary branded T-shirts and Polo Shirts.  These are shirts that have our own design and message originally developed for a Round the Bays walk but since used for any Rotary function to identify you as a Rotary member. These are a great way to be visible when you are out about promoting Rotary.  The shirts are of extremely high quality. If you are interested refer to Peter Whittington's email dated 11 February or contact Peter urgently at syrahnz@gmail.com.  T shirts are $35 each and Polo Shirts are $42 each.

Look good feel good in your Rotary shirt!
