We had a wonderful evening to mark our 30th Anniversary, the reception was a great success and it was good to catch up with so many past members. Hosted by Mayor Justin Lester we had over 80 guests attend including Assistant Mayor Jill Day, City Councillors, distinguished guests such as Melissa Moon, our Rotaract and Interacters and of course, Rotarians past and present.

A big thank you goes to Howard, Anne, Darryl, Paula and Sue (for her photos) for all the work they did to organise and run the evening. Also, to Bill who’s brainchild it was and whose connections made it happen. Also a big thank you to Peter for arranging the dinner at Hudson. The food and the evening was most enjoyable.

The event was tinged with sadness at the passing of Ian Paterson, a wonderful Rotarian and a truly wonderful human being. As I have mentioned in my email, Ian’s funeral is on Tuesday 6th of August at 2pm at St Paul’s Cathedral.

The one major oversight of the evening was that I should have announced our 30th Anniversary Poem Project. Dawn has been working with the Wellington City Council and TAG and has gained approval to announce that we are planning to have a poem in both Te Reo and English placed on the harbour front or environs in recognition of our 30th anniversary.

Dawn has put a great deal of work into this project and while we still have a way to go yet, Dawn deserves our gratitude for getting it this far.

Finally, thank all of you who completed our Member Survey - 33 members (72%) completed the survey which is an excellent response rate. The results are generally supportive of the Club and how we conduct our affairs but did highlight the need for change. We are reviewing the results at the Board and will present the findings later in the month.

See you Wednesday

David

Our Ian Paterson

As many of you will know, sadly Ian  passed away on Tuesday 31st of July after a long battle with cancer.

Ian was one of our most distinguished members, having been President from 1993/94 and the recipient of a Paul Harris Fellow with both a Sapphire and Ruby Pin.

Ian was a true gentleman and had an enormous impact on many of us. Ian was kind, charming and above all one of the most generous people I know. As someone said “he was a good man doing great work for others”.

New System for Paying for Weekly Meeting Attendance
All members will have received a request from our Treasurer, Nick, to make an advance payment to the Club bank account to cover attendance at the next month's breakfast meetings.  This is the beginning of the new system for paying for weekly meetings.  It is designed to simplify and streamline the process at the registration desk by doing away with the need to handle cash for member's breakfasts.  The process has been discussed over the last few months and has met with general agreement as a better way forward.
Your attendance will still be recorded as the basis for deducting the weekly charge against your account.  Guests and non-members will still need to pay in cash.  Obviously you will need to bring some cash for paying Sergeant's fines and Buy the Box.
The process will work as follows:
  1. Club requests a deposit from each member to cover future meeting attendance of $108 per member, equivalent to $27 per week for 4 weeks, on top of their subs
  2. Each month recorded attendance is invoiced against the advance payment and a statement sent to the member showing the amount needed to either top up or be carried forward as a credit.  Ideally members will set up an automatic payment for a monthly payment.
  3. Registration desk will still accurately record attendance of members at meetings
  4. Members must continue giving apologies for meetings they cannot attend.
  5. Should a member register but not attend a meeting, and we are charged for their non-attendance, we will charge them for that meeting.
  6. All members have only 1 club account, so subs also go against any credit or show as owing at the beginning of each year.  However, Trust functions and fundraising will be separate.
  7. Should a member not be able to attend on a regular basis then separate arrangements can be made for that member to pay less as an advance payment, or suspend the automatic payment during absences.
  8. Guests can easily be accommodated with cash payments at the desk as happens now.
  9. Credit balances beyond monthly needs will be refunded on request
Any questions to Nick or Peter.

Rotarians quit over Woman's Membership

Nelson 24 Jan, 1995: The induction of Motueka Rotary Club's first woman member has led to resignations from the club. President Keith Fry said Heather Spence was recently accepted as a member after a letter of recommendation was sent by her former Wellington club, Port Nicholson Rotary. Since then 7 members had resigned, some citing the membership of a woman as the reason. Some of the men had belonged to the club for 25 to 30 years.
