Rotary Club of Port Nicholson Bulletin

Wednesday 13 November, 2019

President
David Shackleton

Listening to Dee, Hugh and Aidan this week, speaking of their experiences as Head Girl, Head Boy and President of Interact, served to reinforce the talent our youth represent.  The maturity, insights and lessons they shared and the breadth of view they displayed were most impressive. It underscores how important our connection to the Rotary Youth programmes is and how much we both benefit.

Our District Governor John Mohi will be speaking to us next week and it would be great to have an excellent turnout. John is known to many of us and is a very respected Rotarian; no doubt John will enlighten us on Rotary Foundation Month and the great work the Foundation does around the world.

You will have all received a questionnaire soliciting your thoughts and feedback on the Bulletin. As was mentioned at a previous meeting Paula and Linda put an enormous amount of work and effort into the Bulletin and we want to determine what is important to you, what you like and don’t like about the Bulletin and how we can improve.

Our Predator Free Initiative spearheaded by Brenda with the help of her husband Dave and Warwick Bell is well underway and we are making excellent progress. We are indebted to them for all their hard work. To date, we have had a great response from members to help service the traps and almost all slots have been filled for the first quarter of the year.

However, more help will always be appreciated. Brenda is working with WCC to hold another induction training session and we are just waiting to hear back from them. In the meantime, please let Brenda know if you can help and support this important initiative.

Have a great week

Interact Students were the speakers today.  First up was

Hugh Morrison, Head Boy Wellington College

Hugh spoke about the privilege of being Head Boy.  Becoming the face of the school and a role model.  Hugh respected the role and found it humbling.  He had to attend lots of events but really enjoyed supporting the arts and culture.  The runathon involved seeing everyone come together in the school to raise funds for a cause.  Sporting experiences including winning a cricket competition with the team environment more important than having super star players.  Hugh is going to the University of Otago next year and gave Thanks to the club for his involvement in the Rotary club.

Dee van Wel
Wellington Girls College
Head Student

A year to remember including increased self awareness.  Dee and the co head student Anna leaned on each other which is good because they are different people but got on well.  Communication is powerful but difficult but Dee learnt how to present depending on the audience. It was also nice having younger students make friends with you.  Staying grounded made her more approachable she believes and  collaboration was awesome but stressed about making sure I did a good job.

Making good decisions for the greater good even if not everyone likes it was a lesson learnt and experiences included:
1. Speaking at parliament on climate change.
2. Are we there yet is a play Dee devised as a school production.
3. Kohi tree to Christchurch sister school after 15 March.
4. Shaved my hair for cancer raising $600. Made me come out from behind my fringe. Going to London next year to perform at the Globe.  Thanks to Rotary I have learned a lot.

Last to speak was Aidan Homewood of Wellington College and President of Interact.

Aidan joined Interact as a Year 11 student and he talked about what Interact achieved this year.  Projects to raise funds were a Movie night and Quizz night.  The movie night raised $1300 for youth line. $2,200 went to blue dragon from the Quizz night to stop trafficking of girls in Vietnam.  Members that volunteer come to about 76 and activities included sorting items for refugees.  District 9940 Interact met in Otaki this year to share ideas with other clubs.  Difficult to make a huge impact but Aidan thinks the purpose is to introduce young people to volunteering and to start serving others.
