We had another great turnout on Wednesday morning and it was great to see Christopher Robertson and Juliet Palmer attend the meeting. Past District Governor Stuart Batty brought us up to date on the wonderful work Rotary World Community Services do in the Pacific.

The impact Rotary has had in the Pacific Islands and the support we provide in times of emergency is truly humbling. I, for one, never imagined Rotary has made such a significant contribution to the rebuilding the islands in times of need. This reinforces our commitment to support the Monte Carlo Night and raise funds for the ambulance to be sent to Samoa.

Mark Maloney the President of Rotary International for 2019/20 at the recent international convention in Hamburg outlined the need for Rotary to change, become more diverse and provide leadership opportunities for all Rotarians.

In support of this goal, the Rotary International board of directors made a commitment to increase the number of women in Rotary and in leadership positions to 30% by 2023. Currently, women internationally make up 23% of our membership, and represent, on average, 20% of leadership positions.

While we are doing a fair job with 33% of our membership and 50% of the leadership positions being held by women members, we clearly have to do better. On that note, Richard will be giving us a presentation next week on our membership data and the plans to grow our numbers.

On Wednesday I will presenting the results of the Membership Survey. 32 members completed the survey so we have a good representation of opinions. As mentioned previously 69% are satisfied with their membership and 90% of members are proud of their membership. However,  we do need to focus on more involvement, ideas, social time and updating processes and rules.

Have a great week, yours in Rotary

David

Speaker Report

Look Beyond Yourself

Look Beyond Yourself was the theme for Rotary International 1991-1992 and this was the first slide for
Stuart Batty QSM who joined Rotary in 1978, has held most positions at club and district level, and was District Governor (9910) in 1991/92.   Stuart's main interest is in the Pacific islands in eradicating poverty, but he has spent time working in Africa and India.   For the past 29 years, he has focussed on Rotary’s World Community Service.  He is Executive Director of Rotary NZ World Community Service Ltd (RNZWCS), a national body of Rotary New Zealand.

RNZWCS has been making Emergency response kits or as we know them ERKs.  The ERKs are packed by volunteers in District 9920 over 3 months every year and are sent to the Pacific following cyclones, flooding, tsunami or other disasters.  Delivery of ERKs is by plane and ferry to outer islands and are often supplemented with a food pack.  5,588 ERKs were delivered to the Pacific from 2007 to 2018.  In addition there are donations in kind usually medical (cataract surgery $250,000 p.a.) and education items on request from Pacific nations.  These extended to $200k of children’s clothing, school desks and books and rebuilding communities after disaster.

There is a need to have buildings that are strong enough to face a category 5 cyclone.  RNZWCS has a good relationship with MFAT who has committed $1.3m to continue rebuilding in Fiji and an example is to provide housing for teachers so that they have somewhere to stay and continue teaching when their own homes have been damaged.  Also in Fiji a fire damaged house has been developed to house mother’s prior to birthing at the nearby hospital.  This means women have a place to rest prior to giving birth rather than travelling too late in the pregnancy and risking the life of both mother and baby as many are travelling from outer islands.   RNZWCS has empowered communities to raise life stock and grow vegetables so they can be self-sufficient.   In Tonga RNZWCS is supporting families with disabled children by improving the living conditions and providing an Ambulance, housing the homeless, improving water and sanitation.   Stuart certainly impressed us with the scope of the work undertaken by RNZWCS and provided us with confirmation of our work toward providing another Ambulance to the Pacific and supporting ERKs.  Stuart finished with the words:
It’s not about us, it’s about them.

Farewell Yusuke and Amineh

............................................
Members will remember Yusuke Ishihara, the District Grant Scholar from Japan who arrived in Q4 2018 to do his PhD at Victoria University over 3-4 years
Rotary Club of Port Nicholson welcomed him as host club. Ishihara gave a presentation to the club earlier this year and his wife Amineh participated in a number of club activities.

Unfortunately his PhD programme did not work out as anticipated due to a combination of unexpected factors and he and Amineh had to abruptly return to Japan on 19 August.
I met with him and Amineh on Sunday, the day before they left. Ishihara apologised profusely for his premature termination of his studies and departure from New Zealand and inability to personally attend a club meeting to thank the club and members for graciously welcoming and supporting him and Amineh during their short time in Wellington and asked me to extend their thanks and appreciation on their behalf. Thank you
