Mike recently received the following correspondence from the House of Grace:
Good morning Mike and Port Nicholson members,
Firstly my apologies for taking so long to send you photos of what we did for the young mums in our care because of your amazing generosity. Because of your kindness we have been able to give the girls that move back into the community and into our aftercare some things for them, their wee ones and practical kitchen items as well.
We also gave the young mums lovely gifts for Mother’s day - here is one of our residents opening her gift with the house parents' kids looking on (sorry her face had to be hidden for privacy).
The front room is finished, as the curtains are now up!
Since fully doing this room up (insulation, double glazed windows, custom made curtains) it has become the main room that is used, even in the cooler weeks!
Thank you for your ongoing incredible support, you are helping make a difference now and to the generations to come.
This week's speaker

There are big plans for this information, and Carey s coming to tell us about it.

WCM Help Needed
If you are able to help deliver food and supplies we collect at the last meeting of the month to the Wellington City Mission your help would be appreciated.
Hi, I have been a member for over a year and am in the project committee. I came to NZ in 1965 to be trained as a dentist under a HK Govt Scholarship for 4 years, graduating with Distinction in 1968. I then worked for the HK Gove for 4years and returned to practice in Wellington for 5 years and went to work in England for 4 years. I returned to NZ and practiced in Wellington until I retired last year. I am very interested in Food and wine. I owned, ran and cooked in 2 restaurants, developed a vineyard and produced pinot noir and chardonnay. I am retired now and look after grandchildren and find it most enjoyable.

Queens Platinum Jubilee Beacon lighting
Well done to David Shackleton and the club volunteers for assisting with the Queens Platinum Jubilee Beacon lighting. Rotary in all commonwealth capitals were asked to coordinate this event. The Wellington City Council organised this in conjunction with Rotary New Zealand. The torch was handed to Mayor Andy Foster, and former Governor-General Lieutenant General The Right Honourable Sir Jerry Mateparae who is a long-standing Rotarian and is representing Rotary.
The event began with a karakia before Mana Whenua ignited a torch and ascended to the lookout of Tangi Te Keo Mt Victoria.
The Right Honourable Sir Anand Satyanand, another long-standing Rotarian was originally to be part of it; however was unable to attend. Together Mayor Andy and Sir Jerry lit the Queen's Platinum Jubilee Beacon.
A special choir – comprising of Wellington-based choirs Supertonic and Pacific Connection – then sung a Song for the Commonwealth, a piece specially commissioned with the chorus in te reo.
The broadcast was picked up by BBC, TVNZ, Reuters and Bloomberg. Of a total of 2,000 beacons lit as part of the four day UK Queen's Birthday holiday, Wellington’s was the second, lit at 9:15 local time, following Apia, the capital of Samoa.
"Port Nicholson was represented by five valiant Rotarians (Brent, Eden, Ross, Marc and David) who braved rain, cold, wind as well as thunder and lightening to serve refreshments to all the participants. We are truly appreciative of their efforts."
-- David
