………………………….........………………..

Weekly meetings are via Zoom due to the situation with Covid-19

President
David Shackleton

Finally, we are at Level 2. While it may be a few weeks before we can meet at the Wellington Club, the end is in sight. Looking back at what we have achieved though this crisis, I am incredibly proud and a little surprised at what we have accomplished

We have added a new member, we have learned new skills, through your generosity we have assisted the House of Grace and purchased two Emergency Response Kits for Tonga, Fiji, and Vanuatu, we have met socially (virtually) and started a topic discussion group etc. A big thank you to all for making this work.

Looking ahead our circumstances will force us to be more innovative and to change. There is a huge need in the community for us to be more hands on and take on projects that require our time and manpower. We are already looking at new ways to raise funds, to add new members, grow the Club, embrace social media and to support members who need our help.

Finally, Gillian Jones the incoming District Governor mentioned a truly relevant quote from Holger Knaack the forthcoming Rotary International President “any age is a good age to be a Rotarian”

Stay safe and positive

David

Video Meeting Etiquette.....

These have gone really well with great participation. We came across these couple of links on video meeting etiquette, which generally apply to our meetings.

https://www.owllabs.com/blog/video-conferencing-etiquette

https://www.inc.com/ss/video-conferencing-best-practices

In addition in a Rotary context it's good to ensure your name (including surname) is correctly showing (right click on your name on your image). Muting your mic and turning off the video when moving around are important too (both prevent distraction)."

Bev's Tip for the week.....

Top of mind for me is how to ‘Share Screen’ .....

It’s useful for parting thoughts, to share correspondence received, a photo or PP slide.

It’s easy ..... first have the photo, page or slide open on your computer, then click ‘Share Screen’ on the bottom toolbar and select the file.
I'm not sure how to do this using another device like an iPad or iPhone, so there ends my limited knowledge!

This weeks speaker....Gillian Jones - Rotary District 9940 District Governor Elect

Gillian Jones, our District 9940 Governor Elect, is looking forward to a year of change. This year’s slogan of Rotary Connects the World has certainly given us the chance to test and implement the incoming slogan of Rotary Opens Opportunities.  Using new technology and thinking outside the square has connected us all and opens opportunities for us to consider how we might use this as the basis for changing the way get things done.

The last few months have given us many positives:

  • Families spending time together

  • Working from home with no commute or morning rush

  • Slowing down a little and learning to breathe

The incoming Presidents have found that most clubs have taken to zoom and skype meetings very well and the engagement levels have been incredibly high, and we become more creative and innovative. Our own club has inducted a new member over the lockdown period, and we have several new guests who are considering joining us. A number of clubs have looked at how we can continue, or even kick start new community projects – an example being foodbank assistance with delivery of food parcels into the community.

Many clubs, like our own, have begun to have two meetings each week – one for Rotary items and one for social fellowship with a virtual wine catch up with maybe a quiz thrown in for laughs.

Winston Churchill is credited with saying – “Never let a good crisis go to waste”. So let’s take the opportunity to continue with innovation and let’s not just slip back into “that’s the way we’ve done it for years”.

On that note, the District Assembly (Rotary training sessions) that was to take place next weekend is now being delivered online. Club members are encouraged to join in over the next three Saturdays (16th, 23rd and 30th May) to find out what our District 9940 is up to, what Rotary in general is up to and how to make sure your club is providing the best experience for your members.

This coming Rotary year we will be celebrating the New Zealand Rotary Centennial year. There are several celebratory projects under way such as:
  • Give Every Child a Future – immunisation for children throughout the Pacific
  • Mana Tangata – our club histories
  • Rotary support for the Planting 1 Billion Trees programme
  • The new Wellington Children’s Hospital – Rotary Sponsored Area
Don’t forget the Rotary Foundation should be our charity of choice – we still need to finish the job with eradicating Polio. All clubs should have a nominated centennial project under way.

June 28th is set for the District Changeover – still not sure what format this will take but be ready if you are keen to attend.

The District Conference for next year is anticipated to in Masterton and we can get a ‘Taste of the Wairarapa’ over the 19th -21st March…the Wairarapa that time of year is a wonderful place to be.

The Rotary International Conference which was taking place in Hawaii will now be a virtual conference – keep a look out for sessions that you can join into online.

There are numerous District Committees looking for new people to join, including our own David Shackleton who is becoming and Assistant Governor.

Gillian is excited about the year ahead with a visit by Rotary President Holger Knack coming and the opportunity to change and innovate – let’s stay future focussed!

All the best Gillian 😊

Kiriwhakapapa news

Miss Piggy’s diary – Episode 8

Life goes on here in my comfortable apartment, although a few sparrows still keep finding a way in to steal my food. Julian thinks he has managed to seal all the holes but as I know well, birds are cunning, and the sparrows somehow find a way to beat him.

Julian and Sue were ecstatic that level two has now been reached and they can now begin to mix and socialise much more freely. Yeah, right! In fact, they have become so used to the pleasant life in isolation that they do not want to get back to the real world. They say they know it is inevitable, but apart from too many deer, rats and pigs, life as hermits suits them. I know how they feel.

I heard Julian tell Sue he was disappointed that he was unable to book a haircut now that this was possible. I missed a lot of the rest of the conversation because Sue was laughing so much. He said the waiting list at all hairdressers was too long − but not as long as his hair. He said he had second thoughts and would now wait until next year for a haircut. But he said that last year, and the year before. At least my feathers get replaced every year, stopping me looking like Wurzel Gummidge, not that I would make such a comment.

Meanwhile Julian has been spending a lot of time this week taking photographs of Sue’s jewellery for the virtual Christchurch Art Show at the end of the month. Apparently, he did suggest, quite strongly, that he would be happy to interview young women to be models for this jewellery and then take the photographs. For some reason Sue did not think this was a good idea and insisted that she would be the model. She did have to find a blouse which was presentable and ironed, not that easy, although I am sure she would say it was no problem.

Other work has kept Julian busy and if he cannot trim his hair, at least he got around to trimming some of the manuka and kanuka. Standing on the roof of the Land Rover may not be the safest way, but nobody was looking.

Keep safe and away from Covid-19.

FUNNIES!

I finally decided to find out what noise it would make if I threw a biro at a bell.
.. the results are pending !

……….

By the way, I do *not* have an obsession with tidiness.

Just thought I ought to clear that up...

Parole Officer: "Why should you be release early?

Prisoner: "Well, I..."

Office: "Go on."

Prisioner: "I just..."

Officer: "Yes?"

Prisoner: "Will you just let me finish my sentance!"

Officer: "No problem; parole denied."
