President
David Shackleton

Our Club is recognised throughout District 9940 for being very active. And that’s the way we want it. To recap the list of activities we have been involved with and organised over the past two months, outlined below is a summary.

  • 30th Anniversary Reception hosted by Mayor Justin Lester
  • Post Mayoral reception dinner at the Hudson.
  • Signed an MOU with Wellington City Council and Wellington Waterfront
  • Planted 500 trees in Tawa
  • Assisted the performers at 5 underground markets.
  • Changed our payment system for breakfasts (though this was in the planning stages for some months)
  • Completed our Member Satisfaction Survey and distributed the results
  • Took part in the Interact day in Otaki
  • Collected funds for the Children’s Hospital
  • Rejuvenated the social events with a most successful dinner at Rock Yard and the WOAP at Logan Brown
  • Had Perambulators walk around Zealandia
  • Port Nic Gardeners in the Wairarapa
  • Assisted with the Interact Quiz Night
Looking forward we still have much to achieve. On the horizon is the Monte Carlo Night, World Polio Day, RYLA, Goalsetters, the Auction, the Christmas Party, more perambulations and social events etc. There are lots of events to get involved with, however, none of this could be possible without the energy, drive and commitment of our members. Because of you, we have a great Club.

Thank you.

David

Speakers Report

Regenerate Magazine was started after Simon Dodd saw people sleeping rough on the streets in Wellington and decided he had to do something to help.

The result was a street magazine modelled on international experience in New York and in cities in the UK where those on the rough side of poverty and housing issues sell the publication and keep half the sale price. In the UK a publication called the Big Issue was started by Roger Roddick of Body Shop fame in 1990.

It’s a way of filling in their day, giving them some income, and restoring pride and sell- confidence to people who have a short supply of all of those qualities.

Dodd is an IT project manager from the UK now living and working in New Zealand. Regenerate now has its nineteenth monthly issue out and will celebrate its second anniversary in November this year.

He told the club that the sellers, two of whom joined members for breakfast, sell about 400-500 copies each month and sometimes more at a cover price of $5 for a 24 page A5 magazine.

Regenerate covers the art and cultural scene in Wellington, and typically carries profiles of the sellers, their poetry and writings, and advertising from supporting organisations.

“It’s an all-volunteer effort,” Simon said, and he’s always looking for more advertisers, volunteers and mentors to help out. At the moment the sellers are usually found at the Newtown and Waitangi markets.

“We tried Lambton Quay, but it didn’t work,” he said. “Too many people with their heads down hurrying from one meeting to another.”

Simon has plans to take the magazine to Auckland and will be visiting there shortly for discussions with welfare organisations.

Rotary Predator-Free Waterfront
While it might appear that this initiative has made a slow start, there has been work going on behind the scenes to establish the terms of engagement with Wellington City Council (WCC). This model of partnership is new to them so it has been important to establish systems that are transferable to other partners and activities. What is clear, is that there is a very strong wish to partner with our Club on this initiative and this intention has now been formalised in an MOU between RCPN and WCC.

Outlined below are next steps:
  • Under the terms of the MOU (and under the H&S legislation) any Rotary Predator Free Waterfront volunteer is required to undergo training prior to initiating trapping activity. This training will be provided by Henk Louw, Biosecurity Specialist, Pest Animals at WCC. The training is scheduled for Wednesday October 2, 8.30-10a.m. and an invitation will be sent out via Clubrunner. Anyone interested in participating in this project is welcome to attend.
  • Dave Lazelle has a commitment from Placemakers to supply the timber for the trapping tunnels. He will organise a Working Bee to make them and WCC will provide the traps and shrouds. More information shortly.
  • WCC has designed a trapping plan which will be reviewed throughout the year. Trapping is expected to begin late October.
Thank you everyone who has shown an interest in the Project. We look forward to getting our traps made and deployed once we have completed our induction on October 2.

In an email to Ken Rayner, one of the organisers, Peter Whittington wrote the following....thankyou for organising a great night on Friday night.  It was extremely well run and the energy of the MCs and performers was reflected by the audience participation.

A lot of fun and very interesting questions.

Congratulations to you and your organising team.
