Our new Rotary Year got off to an excellent start with a turnout of some 30 members and guests. It was great to see Ken Rayner from our Interact Club and Iona Sammons from Rotaract attend the meeting.
I was asked at the meeting today who were our new Board of Directors. While this information was shared at Changeover, I thought it is important to outline who is on the Board for 2019/20.

The new Board is an excellent mix of experience and talent and they are:

Mike Selvadurai Club Administrator, Secretary and President Elect nominee

Bev Wells, Past President

Nic Duncan, Treasurer

Nicole Barker, Public Image

Richard Brodie, Membership

Brenda Lazelle, Community Service

Anne Hare, Youth

Tamaris Livera, International

Tony Robinson, Projects

I will share the new Boards roles and responsibilities and committees in August but until then please give them your fullest support.

I have attached a  link  to the Vision, and Priorities I shared this morning and if you have any questions just let me know.

We will be starting our Membership Satisfaction Survey later this week and will share the results in August. Bev is organising this important function and we will be using Survey Monkey. We really encourage you to complete this questionnaire and provide us with your valuable feedback. The survey shouldn’t take more than 4-5 minutes to complete but will provide us with valuable direction for the coming year.

Finally, a big hand to Nic and Peter for all their work on the payment of our weekly meeting costs. This a most positive change and we are grateful for all your efforts in getting the system launched.

Have a great week

David

The Great Brent Gerrard Block-Chain Bitcoin Artificial Intelligence Show

Initially David talked to the Vision for the club and indicated that he thought we can be better and in order to do that he has outlined a step up in projects. For example we have already started by engaging members in committees.

Last year we had a net gain of three members however over the past two years there is a net loss of about 6 members per year.  The vision is to reinvigorate the social side of the club and to get 80% of club communication via club runner.  We could connect better with Interact and Rotaract by mentoring members with things like interview techniques for example.  There is also a suggestion that we assist other clubs to establish another Rotaract club in the Porirua area.  We have about 20 active members in the city based Rotaract club.  We also need to improve our social media presence to get our name out in the Community so that the public are aware of the projects we run.

Secondly we had a part 2 session from Mr Block Chain = from our very own Brent Gerrard.  Brent started by explaining that Block Chain is just like an open distributed ledger which is tracked and shared so the ledger can be updated and although visible is not able to be changed so there is high trust in the process.

The discussion turned to the question "What is value" in order to illustrate this Brent talked about the gold standard as the base currency which requires a bank to store the gold bars or is converted to cash which also needs an intermediary for storage.  Now however crypto currency can avoid any intermediary.  There is a small charge to FX miners who validate transactions via passwords which are generated by algorithms and they take a fee to create these.  Value is  a perception of value = block chain is effectively a transfer of value from one person to another.   Cryptocurrency is based on trust and there are only 21m bitcoins that miners can access and it gets harder to get to the last bitcoins to generate, so the  value of the bitcoins gets more and more valuable.   What happens when we get to 21m bitcoins, will be more be generated?  Sound confusing well to sum up digital disrupters can cut out the intermediary, however in order to do that people have to put their trust into technology and in the link on the block chain on which they sit.  Still sounds like the cowboy across the road who asked to put a few cattle on another cowboys paddock for feeding only to take them back fattened up and sold off for more bucks!

30th Anniversary Celebrations – Post Mayoral Reception Dinner

The Hudson, Cnr Victoria St and Chews Lane.

The Club has booked the mezzanine floor at The Hudson for club members and friends to enjoy a celebratory dinner following the Mayoral reception on 1 August 2019.

1 August is the first night of Wellington on A Plate, a time when restaurants throughout the City produce exciting and interesting dishes outside of their normal menu fare.  What better way to combine two celebratory events, in one night, by joining your fellow members and friends to continue this special evening over dinner at one of Wellington’s exciting eating establishments.

The Hudson is reknowned for its craft beers on tap, its speciality gin bar, its cocktails and of course the food served in its restaurant.

There is a set menu of 2 courses for $40 or $55 for 3.  If you wish to add in the festival dish (2 sides of venison) the price will go up by approximately $5.  The final menu and pricing will be confirmed shortly.

Individual bills will be produced by the Hudson so you will only need to pay for what you consume.

There are a limited number of seats available so reservations are essential and will be allocated on a first come basis – please register your intention early.

The invitation is on Club Runner for you to register.  Your guests are also welcome.

Any questions please contact Peter Whittington 0n syrahnz@gmail.com or phone on 021 778300

New System for Paying for Weekly Meeting Attendance
All members will have received a request from our Treasurer, Nick, to make an advance payment to the Club bank account to cover attendance at the next month's breakfast meetings.  This is the beginning of the new system for paying for weekly meetings.  It is designed to simplify and streamline the process at the registration desk by doing away with the need to handle cash for member's breakfasts.  The process has been discussed over the last few months and has met with general agreement as a better way forward.
Your attendance will still be recorded as the basis for deducting the weekly charge against your account.  Guests and non-members will still need to pay in cash.  Obviously you will need to bring some cash for paying Sergeant's fines and Buy the Box.
The process will work as follows:
  1. Club requests a deposit from each member to cover future meeting attendance of $108 per member, equivalent to $27 per week for 4 weeks, on top of their subs
  2. Each month recorded attendance is invoiced against the advance payment and a statement sent to the member showing the amount needed to either top up or be carried forward as a credit.  Ideally members will set up an automatic payment for a monthly payment.
  3. Registration desk will still accurately record attendance of members at meetings
  4. Members must continue giving apologies for meetings they cannot attend.
  5. Should a member register but not attend a meeting, and we are charged for their non-attendance, we will charge them for that meeting.
  6. All members have only 1 club account, so subs also go against any credit or show as owing at the beginning of each year.  However, Trust functions and fundraising will be separate.
  7. Should a member not be able to attend on a regular basis then separate arrangements can be made for that member to pay less as an advance payment, or suspend the automatic payment during absences.
  8. Guests can easily be accommodated with cash payments at the desk as happens now.
  9. Credit balances beyond monthly needs will be refunded on request
Any questions to Nick or Peter.
