“Success is not final; failure is not fatal; it is the courage to continue that counts” …. Winston Churchill

These are turbulent and disruptive times.  The situation is changing daily and we seem to be inundated with bad news however, it is important to remember, these conditions won’t last forever.

Rotary has been around since 1905 and during this time has experienced the Spanish flu, two World Wars, stock market crashes and many other challenges. While the present situation is causing us to change and adjust, we must never lose sight of our overall objectives and the good we do for the community. It is the Rotary values, our commitment to better our world, and our friendships that have made Rotary so successful.

We have built a great Club and I genuinely believe each one of us want to make a positive difference in our community. We have built meaningful, lifelong friendships that will prevail whatever the circumstances. We are having a good year and have done an enormous amount for the community and with our youth programmes.

We don’t always get it right and we don’t always agree, but our commitment is undaunting. Now, we need to look at doing things a little differently. We will need to find new ways to communicate, new ways to interact and socialise and build on the great work we do.

The community will need our help now more than ever. If you know of any group that particularly needs support during these tough times, please let me or one of the Board know.

I am convinced with everyone’s help we can do this and come out of our present dilemma a stronger and more motivated Club.

Stay well

David

Speaker's Report

RYLA Attendees

Our speakers this week, Penny Li and Caitlin Veneer were our 2020 District 9940 RYLA attendees. Like many of us, I always enjoy the RYLA presentations and this year didn’t disappoint. Penny and Caitlin shared the highlights of the week for them and it was great to hear of some of the new activities that have been added to the programme.

While the concept isn’t new, their activity around making personal choice: Choosing to live above the line (with positive energy) or below the line, was a great reminder to us all to consider how we approach the challenging times head.

Their activities were varied, including having presentations from Good Bitches Baking – a group who bake for folk who could do with just a little act of kindness. The presentation was followed by a Team baking exercise.

From bowling to overcoming the fear of the Adrenalin Forest activities, Penny and Caitlin learnt so much about themselves and discovered strategies for working well as a team and playing to each other’s strengths. So, once again, the RYLA presentations confirmed the value we can add to the lives of the young people we support.

Message from Sarah Agnew

I’ve been thinking about everyone at PN Rotary, as I imagine a number of people will be needing to self isolate at the minute especially now it’s at a level 2. With that in mind, please let anyone know that I’m happy to go do supermarket/takeaways/supply runs etc to drop round to people anytime. Can also do socialising through the window too!

Just call me anytime on 021 246 7712.
Club Alumni News

Alison Geddes (member 2011-2012) and Dougal Walker recently got married in Whangarei. After Alison left Wellington, she worked in Sydney before returning to NZ three years ago. Alison is General Manager, Planning and Development at the Whangarei District Council. She met Dougal at a Contiki staff reunion in Queenstown several years ago. Here’s the very happy couple!

Online Buy The Box
Bev is very happy to buy the box this week as she has become a Grandma for the first time! Her daughter Jenn and husband Rob’s new son was born in Auckland on Saturday. All doing very well.

Bev is also pleased to report that 23 March will be one year since she experienced a Spontaneous Coronary Artery Dissection (SCAD) heart attack. A follow-up full body scan of all her arteries recently showed they’re all healthy!

Rotary Predator Free Waterfront Project - Review Wednesday April 1.

Our Review with Wellington City Council is scheduled for 9-10am on April 1. The Council is providing a meeting venue on the Terrace and I will confirm details later. The review will take the form of an open discussion on the success of the Project to date and consideration for improvements or possible adjustments to the trap locations. I would welcome any suggestions or agenda items so we can notify Henk and Fraser in advance.

New members interested in becoming involved in the Project are VERY welcome to attend. And if you are interested and cannot attend please let me know.

Thank you again for your support

Brenda Lazelle

Predator Free Waterfront Servicing Schedule
Again – many thanks to Trappers for their support on our Predator Free Waterfront efforts. Our tally to date is 43 mice and 1 rat – and a couple of inquisitive blackbirds unfortunately. But we understand a reduction of mice could result an increase in the number of skinks around – so still very positive.
