President
David Shackleton

As part of my homework in preparation for the Australia/New Zealand conference this weekend in Christchurch I decided to learn more about Rotary International. Sometimes, we forget how big Rotary is and the impact it makes throughout the world.

Rotary International has over 2 million members and affiliates, has over 35,000 clubs worldwide and 545 Districts. We also have over 900 staff in Evanston, Illinois and around the world.

In 2018 The Foundation provided $87 million in awards and grants. The funds went to such programmes as providing clean water, saving children and mothers, reducing preventable diseases and supporting education.

On the subject of the Rotary Foundation, it has recently been recognised for the 12th consecutive year with a four-star rating from Charity Navigator. Charity Navigator assesses how the Foundation uses its donations, sustains its programmes and services and practices good governance and openness. Only one percent of the organisations Charity Navigator evaluates have received 12 consecutive four-star evaluations. This rating demonstrates the Foundations strong financial health and commitment to accountability and transparency

Have a great week and see you on Wednesday.

2. Heather let us know that the Christmas party is on 28 November at Bella Italia.
Speaker - Julie Webb-Pullman
(pictured here with Alan Strawbridge and Bev Wells)

Social, Political and Justice Advocate and a member of several human rights observer missions in the Pacific, Latin America and Gaza.  Julie talked mainly about being a Middle East Correspondent Investigator.

Julie's academic achievements include but are not limited to Master of Public Health from University of Otago, Postgraduate Certificate in Applied Law from University of Queensland and Bachelor of Arts from Victoria University.

The first trip to Gaza for Julie was in 2010 and she noted that there is only one Democratic nation in the region.  In 2014 Julie experienced the 50 day offensive while working as a journalist in Gaza - despite being offered the opportunity to leave she stayed.  At times there was no telephone or internet so it was like camping in a house.  Meanwhile warnings are received when there is an expected bombing as smaller items are dropped on the roof to warn more devastating bombs are coming - people would grab some belongings and go.  Others now resigned to staying put as their view is that it makes no difference you can’t do anything about it so you just carry on.  There were many horrifying events such as a Hospital for rehabilitation situated on the border is often bombed.  Evacuating sick and injured people and working with people in a war-torn environment she observed that they must be very brave people.

Julies birthday is on 30 July and on this day there was a terrible bombing at a regular market, hundreds of people were injured or killed and yet Julie managed to find a restaurant despite bombs going off all around them to celebrate.  Julie said it felt like a moment of power/defiance as she felt she still managed to have a birthday dinner.  Julies observation is that Gaza residents carry on with their lives and feel they do not wish to be oppressed and frightened.  By seeing this first hand Julie said it is a human right to exist and in the face of 80% of the Gaza people dependent on aid it was extremely humbling.  Julie talked to the NZ experience of finding a peaceful way to resolve space.  Finding a solution in the region could take some time as unlike domestic criminal offences which can take a year or two to resolve in the case of international crimes it can take a lot longer as lab testing on bombs origination and collecting evidence is no easy task.  I asked Julie afterwards if she thought there would be a resolution in our life time and she indicated there are many more groups involved now which is complicating matters further.  On a lighter note Julie's claim to fame in the Gaza was to introduce citrus slice and carrot cake to the Middle East.

Thank you
