Wednesday 18 December, 2019

………………………….........………………..

President
David Shackleton

What an excellent way to end the year with the Hon Grant Robertson speaking to the largest turnout we have had this year. We had 53 members and guests attend the meeting and it was great to see so many family members join us.

The even better news is that we had 5 potential members attend of which 2 will be inducted in the New Year. A big hand goes to Richard and all those who are introducing the Club to potential new members.
As I mentioned at the meeting the Malaghan Institute are establishing a Scholarship to honour the memory of Ian Paterson and his wonderful legacy of support and generosity. The Scholarship will also recognise the support and assistance the Rotary Club of Port Nicholson has provided Malaghan over the years. The scholarship will be named “The Ian Paterson and Rotary Club of Port Nicholson Scholar”

The recipient will be a researcher in the cancer field that displays similar virtues to those Ian held dear. Generosity of spirit and mind, connection with the community and a team player. The recipient will be chosen by Senior Scientists of the Malaghan Institute in consultation with the Paterson family and ourselves. The Scholarship will be presented at one of our meetings. This is a great tribute to Ian and the Club.
Finally, congratulations and thanks to everyone for a great year of service and achievement. And as Howard said, “we are ordinary people doing extraordinary things”. Have a marvellous holiday, go safely and see you in 2020.

David

Guest Speaker -
Grant Robertson

Our final speaker for 2019 was the Right Honourable Grant Robertson. He began
by acknowledging the generosity of Mark Dunajtschik, who attended as a guest of Bill Day. We look forward with interest as the Children’s Hospital takes shape. He also acknowledged the huge contribution Dawn Sanders makes to young people and young leaders across New Zealand.

The Minister referred to a number of highlights of his year. Wearing his Minister of Sport & Recreation hat, he attended the Cricket World Cup final – “we didn’t win but we definitely didn’t lose either”. The following day he was there to support the Silver Ferns take out the Netball World Cup. He considered this game and outcome was the highlight of his year – to see a team come from so far behind with the right leadership, to achieve such an outstanding performance.

A negative was the horror and tragedy of March 15 in Christchurch and it caused him to reflect on, as a country, we can never be complacent of the ills of the world not coming to New Zealand.  As Minister of Finance he has been particularly challenged by how we are affected by the rest of the world’s financial downturns and conflicts.

But what the Christchurch mosque attack and the Whakaari White Island tragedy demonstrated is that under impossible circumstances New Zealanders have the ability to come together in adversity where ordinary people do extraordinary things for others. As he said, that’s what Rotary does  - Service Above Self

Despite the challenges of the year he reports the country is in a better place financially than it was earlier in 2019 and is still doing as well or better than the countries we compare ourselves to. His financial highlight was delivering a wellbeing budget – changing the way we do budgets to look at more broad measures, ensuring prosperity and looking after New Zealanders are included.

Early notification that the annual Round the Vines run/walk will take place on Saturday 21 March 2020.  I have booked Keith's place in Martinborough for the weekend, so we will finish with a BBQ there after the event.  Thanks Keith for allowing us to recuperate at your place.  Either keep or start training over the festive break to ensure you are in peak physical condition for this event.  It is a lot of fun with both competitive and very social runners and walkers welcome. The drink stands around the course are all themed and serve a range of beverages that include "water".  More details in the New Year.

Rotary Soft Shell Jackets
Opportunity to purchase

The Rotary soft shell jackets kept a few of us dry when we had a downpour at the Waitangi market carpark on Sunday 1 December plus they look great and are really comfortable to wear!

Following several requests, here is the web link if you wish to place an order http://rdusupplies.com.au/apparel/clothing/. Look for Ladies and Mens Geneva jackets and check the chest measurements for
S – 2XL sizes so you get the right fit. There’s sleeved (AUD$70.31) or vest (AUD59.49). Also, Polar Fleece options.

There’s a wide range of other Rotary branded clothing and accessories that you may be interested in buying. This is not a club order so you will need to make your own purchases.

Our club is frequently out in the community and it’s good to be recognised. Something to think about in the New Year with new members joining the club - we may be able to do a re-print of the Port Nich. club shirts “People like you and me” if there is sufficient interest. We also had a few people interested in the Rotary Volunteer Army
t-shirts that we could perhaps look at producing if there was sufficient demand.

Thanks

Bev
